Orfeó Català, Orquestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu & Puig

Monumental, dramatic and eminently choral, Elías de Mendelssohn is a work tailored for the great choral forces of the Palau de la Música Catalana. The Orfeó Català, the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana and the Cor de Noies de l'Orfeó Català combine their voices with the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu to tackle one of the great oratorios of Romanticism. The choir is its main protagonist, alongside a quartet of soloists led by baritone José Antonio López in the role of Elías. Prophet of the Old Testament, Elías stars in a narrative of faith, conflict and hope, with episodes as powerful as the drought and the final arrival of rain. Mendelssohn constructs this great choral fresco looking at the masters he most admired, Bach and Händel, and for this reason Elías can remind us of his great oratorios and passions. The connection with Bach is especially significant this season: Mendelssohn was key in the recovery of his music in the 19th century by bringing back to the stages the Pasión según san Mateo, precisely in the year the Palau commemorates the three hundred years of its premiere. With Xavier Puig at the helm of this great choral and orchestral deployment, Elías presents itself as one of the great choral highlights of the season.
