Josep Pons, the most prominent Catalan conductor of the moment, returns to the Palau de la Música Catalana to present a new artistic stage in Barcelona with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, of which he is the chief conductor. After years of association with the Gran Teatre del Liceu, where Wagner and Richard Strauss have held a prominent place in his career, Pons arrives with his new orchestra and a programme that unmistakably bears his signature. The "Prelude and Death of Isolda" from Tristan und Isolde by Wagner condenses the tension, desire, and emotional intensity of an opera that transformed the musical language of its time. With the Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, that intensity transforms into contemplation and farewell, in one of the most beautiful pages of the repertoire for soprano and orchestra. They will be performed by Elisabeth Teige, especially linked to the Wagner and Strauss repertoire. The Orchestral Suite from Elektra completes the programme showing another facet of Strauss, more visceral, dramatic and overflowing.
