Capuçon, Nederlands Philharmonic & Viotti

Gautier Capuçon, one of the world's most renowned cellists, returns to the Palau de la Música Catalana with one of the major works in the repertoire for his instrument: the Dvořák Cello Concerto. A score as demanding for the soloist as generous for the listener, which from its opening theme reveals the Czech composer's gift for creating melodies capable of captivating from the very first moment. The French cellist, one of the standout names of this season, changes here the intimacy of chamber music for the grand dimensions of the orchestra and for a concert that seems tailored to all his expressivity. With the Symphony No. 6, "Pathétique", Tchaikovsky left one of the great peaks of romantic symphonism and one of the most personal expressions of his entire legacy. Of extraordinary emotional intensity, the symphony breaks expectations until it leads to a slow, dark and profoundly moving finale, unusual among the great symphonies of his time. Tchaikovsky premiered it just nine days before his death, without knowing the enormous posthumous success it would achieve. And its nickname, far from the negative sense we give to the word today, refers to pathos: passion, emotion, which is truly what this work expresses, becoming one of the most performed and beloved symphonies in the repertoire. Leading the Nederlands Philharmonic, Lorenzo Viotti, one of the batons with the greatest projection of his generation, completes a bill that brings together two great names of the international scene and two works especially loved from the great repertoire. Dvořák and Tchaikovsky, melody and passion, in a programme designed to reach the listener directly.
