Don José gradually loses all the values he had cultivated throughout his life and finds himself transformed into everything he had always hated in exchange for staying with his lover. Micaela, moved by deep and sincere love, tries to correct the behaviour of her beloved, finding rejection and indifference. A lost and mad don José, driven by the jealousy he feels in losing Carmen to the great torero Escamillo, cannot bear to see what he has become and decides to end it all drastically with her, destroying her future along the way.
