To mark the 90th anniversary of the death of Federico García Lorca, the dance company Joven Ballet Flamenco Danzarte pays tribute to him with the work El Viaje, inspired by his book Poeta en Nueva York. It is a show designed to delve into Lorca's poetry, always from the perspective of dance, accompanied by the best performance by actor Joan Fernández. Through dance, we aimed to accompany the poet on his journey, first to New York and then to Cuba, and express the different feelings that his stay there provoked in him and that led him to write one of his most recognized poetry books. In El Viaje we combine Spanish dance and hip hop, representing Lorca's experiences through flamenco, and the reality he encountered in New York and Cuba through hip hop and salsa. The work begins in Granada when Federico García Lorca was invited by Fernando de los Ríos, a family friend, to travel with him to give a series of lectures in New York and Cuba. He embarked on the journey in June 1929. Through dance, we first show the initial dazzlement that the city produced in him, the huge skyscrapers, the crowd, the modernity... A change occurred in him when he realized that that modernity implied a dehumanization of society and this, together with the economic situation of the country with the fall of the Stock Exchange, caused the poet great disappointment and deep distress. We also wanted to reflect the situation of marginalization that the black community suffered at that time. For Lorca, blacks represented nature, everything that opposed the city of New York and its inhabitants. Our work ends with the poet's arrival in Cuba, which meant a reunion with the light, the joy of his native Granada.
