Visita guiada mensual a la Mina Canta (Mina d'en Negrín, La Vajol-l'Alt Empordà)

Recently, the restoration of the Mina Canta building in La Vajol has been completed regarding its role during the Spanish Civil War concerning the evacuation of the Republic's economic and artistic heritage. Its opening to the public is a further, definitive step in its dignification as a memory space, a process that began decades ago. In 1937, the Mina Canta de la Vajol was confiscated and a fortified building with function as a refuge and storage facility was constructed there, initially for the funds of the Ministry of Finance, the Caja de Reparaciones, and subsequently also for the Central Board of the Artistic Treasury, which used storage facilities in Figueres, Peralada, and La Vajol. For months, a group of workers from Cartagena carried out the conditioning and construction works at the Mina Canta under the direction of the architect and lieutenant of the Popular Army of the Republic, Juan Negrín Mijailov, son of the President of the Government, Juan Negrín López. The main function of the bunkerized building was to provide access to temporarily store these economic goods, gold and jewels, and artistic items, through elevators, into the armored chamber that was set up inside the mine.
