The Museu de la Música presents an exhibition dedicated to the creative universe of Bernard (1917–2015) and François Baschet (1920–2014), two artists and inventors who, from the 1950s of the 20th century, proposed a new way of understanding the musical instrument.
The Museu de la Música presents an exhibition dedicated to the creative universe of Bernard (1917–2015) and François Baschet (1920–2014), two artists and inventors who, from the 1950s of the 20th century, proposed a new way of understanding the musical instrument. Their contribution is concretized in a set of inventions they called sound sculptures built with industrial and everyday materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, cardboard, or inflatable cushions, and capable of generating complex and unusual sounds without resorting to electricity. The result of an approach that combines art and science, intuition and method, the Baschet universe develops a unique research on the relationships between form, matter and sound. Intuition, play, exploration and direct participation in sound production define an open and accessible conception of the instrument and of the musical experience. In this sense, the Baschet sound sculptures can be understood as open works, true resonant utopias that favor new forms of listening and participation. The Baschet brothers' legacy has been presented in numerous individual and collective exhibitions in museums around the world, and has also had a wide projection in the pedagogical and social fields, with applications in schools, hospitals, cultural centers and other institutions. The Museu de la Música de Barcelona conserves three Baschet instruments. In 2009, François Baschet promoted, together with researchers from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, the Baschet Sound Sculpture Workshop, which gives continuity to this line of research, creation and dissemination. As part of the show, at the Foyer of Sala 1 is also presented the monumental sculpture Lingby, by the Baschet brothers, which can be visited during concert hours with the corresponding entry until June 14. In collaboration with the Baschet Sound Sculpture Workshop of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UB. Curated by: Martí Ruiz, Jordi Casadevall – Baschet Sound Sculpture Workshop – Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Barcelona Jordi Alomar – Museu de la Música de Barcelona
