In a context of growing secularism, the composer from Hamburg approaches a spirituality that goes beyond religious matters, despite the Protestant background of this splendid symphonic-choral piece. The evening is complemented by Song of Destiny (Schicksalslied op. 54) by the same composer. It is a short and outstanding work for choir and orchestra, premiered in 1871 and based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin.
